Quick answer
Mulch feeds the soil and keeps roots cooler, but it breaks down and needs refreshing. Rock lasts much longer and stays put in wind, but it holds heat and doesn't improve the soil. Many yards use both.
Choose Mulch When
- Beds have shrubs, flowers, or perennials
- You want to improve clay soil over time
- You're fine refreshing beds about once a year
Choose Rock When
- The area is windy and mulch keeps blowing away
- There are few plants, or you want low upkeep
- Areas along the foundation or drainage paths
Heat Matters
In full Oklahoma sun, rock can get very hot and stress nearby plants. Mulch is usually the safer choice around plants that need cooler roots.
