Quick answer
Bermuda needs full sun and thins out in shade. In partial shade, zoysia or tall fescue often does better. In deep shade where no grass grows well, a mulch bed or shade-tolerant ground cover is usually the better long-term fix.
How Much Sun Is Enough?
Track the area for a day. Spots with less than roughly six hours of direct sun are a struggle for Bermuda. Areas with only a few hours of sun are hard for any turf.
Options by Shade Level
- Light shade: zoysia often holds up well
- Moderate shade: tall fescue, overseeded in fall, can work with good watering
- Heavy shade: mulch beds, stepping stones, or shade-tolerant ground cover
Help Shaded Grass Survive
Mow shaded areas a bit higher, water less than the sunny parts of the lawn, and consider raising the lower tree limbs to let more light reach the ground.
