Quick answer
Bermuda spreads by above-ground stolons and underground rhizomes, so it creeps into beds constantly. A deep physical edge plus regular edging and mulch is the most reliable defense.
Why It Invades
The same aggressive spreading that makes Bermuda great for repairing a lawn makes it a pest in beds. Runners can travel several inches under shallow borders.
What Works
- Install a border that goes several inches deep
- Edge the bed line every few weeks in summer
- Keep 2 to 3 inches of mulch so runners are easy to spot and pull
- Spot-treat with a grass-selective herbicide safe around listed ornamentals
What Doesn't
Landscape fabric alone usually fails; Bermuda grows over it and roots into the mulch on top.
