Your May checklist
Fertilize for the first time
Once Bermuda is fully green and growing, apply a balanced fertilizer according to label rates. This fuels the dense growth that crowds out weeds.
Aerate if the soil is compacted
Late spring, when Bermuda is growing strongly, is the best window for core aeration — the lawn recovers quickly.
Mow weekly, sometimes more
In peak growth, Bermuda can need mowing every 5–7 days. Keeping up is easier than catching up.
Start deep, infrequent watering
As rain becomes less reliable, shift to watering deeply once or twice a week rather than a little every day.
Watch for grub and disease signs
Irregular brown patches that spread can signal grubs or fungal disease. Catching them early makes treatment far easier.
Pro tip
May is a great month for sod installation — warm soil and (usually) some rain help new sod root fast.
