Quick answer
Keep new sod and the soil underneath constantly moist for the first week or two, then gradually water less often but more deeply as roots grow into the soil.
A Simple Schedule
- Days 1–7: water lightly once or twice a day so sod never dries
- Week 2: cut back to about once a day
- Weeks 3–4: water every few days, more deeply
- After that: switch to a normal deep, infrequent schedule
How to Check Rooting
Gently tug a corner. If it resists, roots are taking hold. If it lifts easily, keep up frequent watering.
First Mow
Mow once the sod is rooted and the grass has grown above normal height, usually within a couple of weeks in summer.
